On May 11, 1949, the Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy Maryland was formally launched with thirty-two members at its Charter Night. Approximately 225 persons witnessed the presentation of a charter to the newly organized Kiwanis Club at ceremonies held at the Fire Company Hall.  The dinner was presided over by  Lieutenant Governor James A. Payne of the Ninth Division in the Capital District.

Charter members of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Airy Maryland were: Raymond E. Selby (charter president),  C. Robert Browning, L. Eugene Purdum, L. L. Browning, Edmund C. Pusey, Conrad V. Brieger, Jr., M. V. Runkles, Jr., George Keith Byers, Clarence B. Saas, Hubert P. Burdette, Kenneth Burdette, J. W. Spaulding, Dennis Corrick, Samuel R. Steel, Rev. Wesley Dodge, Walter L. Spurrier, J. Stanley Grabill, S. Lowry Stroh, Harry E. Hahn, William R. Stroh, William S. Hood, Howard E. Thompson, Wesley Leatherwood, Asa H. Watkins, James M. Lednum, Ira D.
